Do You Need Fine Art Insurance Coverage While Your Painting is at CCPC?
At CCPC, we carry property insurance and liability insurance to protect our equipment and pieces under our care. However, the value of your painting might exceed our coverage. To cover your piece while it is in the lab for examination and/or treatment, we recommend providing your own insurance coverage, either through a fine art floater on your homeowner's insurance or a separate fine art insurance policy. Some insurance companies also offer fine art coverage through their Personal Articles Policies. This type of policy provides protection against theft and accidental direct physical damage to covered items—including fine art.
Alternatively, clients with private collections and those bringing pieces from cultural institutions may opt to waive additional insurance coverage requirements, but this is not typically advised. Of course, the best option depends on the value of the art, the amount of time conservation treatment will take, your existing insurance coverage, your unique needs, and perceived risk. It’s important to thoroughly understand the terms and conditions of any fine arts insurance policy you are considering. Read on to learn more.
Insuring Paintings While at CCPC for Examination or Treatment
Before purchasing additional coverage, start by reviewing your current insurance. Many homeowners or renters policies cover personal property, but the specifics vary—especially when it comes to art that’s off-site for restoration. Some policies might require an endorsement or rider for high-value items, while others may not offer off-premises protection at all. Fine art insurance policies, on the other hand, are designed specifically for these scenarios, offering more tailored and comprehensive coverage.
If you own a larger collection, you might consider blanket coverage, which insures your entire collection under one policy, or scheduled coverage, which lists each item individually for its appraised value. Each approach has its pros and cons, depending on your collection’s size and value. For more information, we refer you to this resource from Artwork Archive.
